The making of our first Lovely Sparkling

While the first Liebichwein sparkling wine project began as simply producing a wine for the family, it is now available as a limited release. We are over the moon with this Lovely Sparkling wine!

You may be asking, why have we made a sparkling and why has it taken us so long?

It’s no secret that Janet?s favourite wine style is fizz and our whole family enjoy sharing bubbles with friends and family.?Ron has been experimenting with growing a variety of Pinot Noir clones and making the odd dry red which he?s been pretty happy with, but he was up for a new challenge. A trip to the Champagne region in 2014 was the inspiration needed for Ron to explore the realm of Traditional Method sparkling.

We knew we needed help with this project so we enlisted the support of Sean and Sue Delaney of Sinclair?s Gully and Simon Greenleaf who make fine wines in the Adelaide Hills. They all encouraged us to have a go and were willing to share their tips and provide access to their equipment.?Excitedly, we embarked on the collaboration.

The Lovely Sparkling story started early in vintage 2014 when we handpicked our own Pinot Noir destined to be the sparkling base wine.? This was then blended with fresher Pinot base wine from vintage 2016 to build complexity. In late 2017, we arranged a few rounds of dedicated tasting trials to get the balance of body and sweetness just right.?The wine is hand-disgorged, dosaged, capped and labelled to order. We decided to use our own Ruby Fortified Grenache for dosage to add sweetness and a pink hue.

The next steps were to think of a suitable name and package.?We chose the name ?Lovely? for a number of reasons. Our family name Liebich is very close to the German word ‘lieblich’ which means ‘lovely’, the Barossa Valley maintains strong German heritage, and of course the wine is pretty lovely to look at, sip and savour.

Given that the quantity is very limited, purchases are restricted to cellar door customers and mailing list members.

Taste Notes
Delicate blush from contact with grape skins. Tantalising strawberry, blossom and toasted brioche aromas lead to a lively lingering palate. Simply lovely!

Tempt Red Blend 2014

A wholly tempting blend of classic Bordeaux and Spanish varietals all grown on the Liebich property in the southern part of the Barossa Valley. The name “Tempt” derives from the letters of the three varietals.

The Petit Verdot and Tempranillo vines, planted in 2000, are some of the oldest growing in the Barossa Valley region. Our climate in South Australia is not dissimilar to the climate and terrain of several regions in Spain, so Tempranillo is well suited to our site.

Petit Verdot provides attractive berry fruits, Merlot rounds out the smooth body and a splash of Tempranillo adds depth and lengthens the palate. ?This unique blend was hand plunged and basket-pressed, then spent 18 months undisturbed in seasoned French oak, before being bottled without filtration to encapsulate the fruit flavours.

This wine can be enjoyed now and for at least 10 years. Perfect with tapas and paella. This wine?was bottled in screw cap to immortalise the magnificent flavours beyond the life span of cork.

Taste Notes: ?Deep burgundy colour. Intense bouquet of raspberries, mulberries, floral and sweet spice which follow through to the palate. Medium-full bodied with fine tannins, excellent fruit length, and a soft finish.

Blend: ?40% Petit Verdot ?40% Merlot ? 20% Tempranillo

Alc. Vol. 14.5%

RRP: $24.00/bottle

Case: $259/12 bottles (save $29)

Raisin Apera – Luscious Barossa Fortified

New Release Fortified - first label mock up
New Release Fortified – first label mock up

We are proud to present our new release Apera in the style of Sweet Sherry as we continue to hone in on our reputation for fantastic fortifieds.

Ron has been making wine for 46 years in the Barossa region. He makes no secret of the fact that fortifieds, particularly so-called ?white ports? are what got him hooked on winemaking in the first place.

The favourable weather conditions during the 2015 harvest allowed the fruit to naturally become raisins on the vine, perfect for making this style of wine. Semillon grapes almost left forgotten in the vineyard were combined with 1/3 ripe Riesling grapes producing juice that had a rich raisin-like flavour which was lightly fortified with 100% grape spirit to retain 9.2?Baume sweetness.

Raisin Apera is reminiscent of a sticky Botrytis style with warm honey toffee characters. The burnished gold colour belies the youthfulness of the wine. An irresistible perfumed scent of candied citrus mixed with raisins and a luscious sweet finish. The Riesling component lifts the nose and lightens the palate.

This sweet sherry style wine compliments lighter wine drinking moments either before or after meals. Serve chilled on hot days or over crushed ice. Also a versatile ingredient in the kitchen in sauces, sorbets and cocktails.?Try preparing a sorbet or poach your favourite seasonal fruit in a little of the diluted wine.

Raisin Apera is a new addition to Liebich?s extensive range of fortified wines at Liebichwein cellar door in Rowland Flat. It comes packaged in 375mL bottles, a handy size for travelling.

Exclusive to Cellar Door and Mailing List customers.
