Barossa Vintage Festival 2017 Wrap Up

It’s incredible to see the Barossa Vintage Festival being so successful over the last 70 years – the longest running wine festival in Australia!

We were thrilled to meet so many new faces during festival events and at Liebichwein cellar door. Our scarecrow Benno (Ron’s grandfather’s name) was there to wave his glass of plonk to all who passed by in Rowland Flat.

The weather was kind and crowds flocked to popular events like the Vintage Festival Parade which we watched in full for the first time ever! Following the parade, Ron was kept busy organising the Grape Treading Competition. A large audience gathered at Nuriootpa Oval to watch 12 teams of children and adults stomp over 20 buckets of Grenache grapes. Ron has since turned this juice into a batch of port.

Congratulations to locals Steve Schiller and Paul Noack of “The Harvesters” for backing up their Grape Treading Champion title from the 2015 festival. They stomped a whopping 1590mL in 2 minutes pipping the Penfolds team by just 20mL.

Another fun event was Feast, Folk and Fossick at Lyndoch where a huge BBQ was built and fired up from 2am on feasting day. Look out for a repeat of this popular event.

Barossa Vintage Festival Grape Stomping Results 2015

Grape juice was flying as the iconic grape treading event returned for its biennial appearance at the Barossa Vintage Festival on 18th April 2015. Liebichwein have proudly sponsored this event for over 10 years.

The treading event differed from previous years by holding all heats and finals on the one day at ‘Barossa Comes Home’ on Tanunda Oval not long after the festival parade wound into town. There were three hotly contested competitions with a total of 20 teams participating in the Winery, School and Open Classes.

Young and old climbed into the bins and eagerly stomped the grapes. The participants got right into it, especially the kids teams who relished having a go. At one stage there were four adult teams in second place who had stomped the same amount of juice. Enthusiastic crowds watched throughout the day, even when the event was almost a complete wash out. Latter teams even got a slight advantage from the rain.

The winery winners received a trophy, a specially labelled magnum of Liebich Ruby Grenache and a mixed box of wines donated by Barossa wineries. The school winners will get their name engraved in the Liebichwein Barrel Trophy.

Special thanks to Australian Cork Company for donating the perpetual winery trophy, Dave Devries for ringside announcements and all the helpers who made the event less sticky for everyone involved. Thanks to Kersbrook Cold Store for use of their cool room for grape storage. Ron, who supplied the Grenache grapes, is now converting this well-stomped juice into a smooth young Tawny.

Barossa Vintage Festival 2015 Wrap Up

Grape stomping, street parade, scarecrows, chocolate and wine indulgence were just some of the variety of activities Liebichwein were involved with over the five days of the Barossa Vintage Festival held in April 2015.

Cellar Door was run off its feet with people booking in for the Fortified and Chocolate Experience. Visitors enjoyed a journey of flavour through four varieties of premium fortified wines ranging from two to twenty years old. Wines were matched to four homemade chocolate truffles. A rare treat!

Once again we entered a float in the famous Barossa Festival Parade, the longest street parade in the southern hemisphere. Our daughter Briony and son-in-law Damian proudly dressed the winery float in a ‘Classic Old Barossa’ theme complete with scarecrow (Grandpa “Gus” Braunack) and classic 1960’s beach buggy. Barossa Vintage Festival 2015

This is our favourite event on the wine tourism calendar. We love the way it showcases the Barossa as a whole be it food, wine, art, heritage or community spirit.

In the Barossa there are big plans and preparations for the upcoming festival held in the April school holidays.

The programme is getting back to its grass roots events, popular in the early years. We are happy to see this swing back to the good times of the past. The vineyards will be dotted with scarecrows, all the wineries will be presenting special feature events including ourselves with chocolate and fortifieds.

Liebichwein will again be sponsoring the grapetreading  and presenting our wines at Barossa Comes Home, a special event held after the Festival Parade at Tanunda Oval on Saturday April 18th 2015.

Early bookings are advised for ticketed events!
