Description

A premium single vineyard wine from 100% Shiraz planted in 1969 by Clarence Walter “Darkie” Liebich. Dead arm affliction reduces yield but enhances flavour as does the use of hand-pruning and minimal irrigation. The vines grow on heavy black biscay soil at Rowland Flat on the eastern foothills of the Barossa.

Ron Liebich’s uncle, “Darkie” Liebich was one of three sons born to his grandfather Benno Liebich. He encouraged Ron’s winemaking abilities and to continue the family business. This wine of great quality and character is dedicated to his honour.

Traditionally hand plunged, basket pressed, and unfiltered to retain natural fruit characters. A unique Shiraz having spent over five years maturation in older American and French oak barrels resulting in a multi-layered wine.

This older style red has seductive smoothness and concentrated flavours lingering long after the first sip. The nose is intense and full of rich ripe berries with vanilla, chocolate and hints of aniseed. The oak tannins are well softened and balanced with the ripe fruit flavours.

A complex full-bodied wine in the Liebichwein premium range. Exceptional drinking now or will reward long term cellaring up to 15 years and beyond.
